1967-to-2026 MP Representation Gap: in 1967, an MP across most major States represented roughly 4 to 5 lakh electors. Today, a Kerala MP represents about 14 lakh, while a Uttar Pradesh or Bihar MP represents around 19 lakh.
Federalism Versus One-Vote-One-Value: Article 81 requires seats to be allocated among States "so far as practicable" on a national average. This leeway lets the Constitution balance two competing goals: protecting smaller States' representation, and keeping every vote of roughly equal value.
