Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) launched 'Shruti', the second Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) it is building for the Indian Navy, at its Kolkata yard on 11 August 2026. The launch comes less than three months after GRSE launched the first vessel in the pair, 'Sanghmitra', on 20 May 2026.
Launch Details
- Launched By: Manika Sadhu, wife of Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition, Indian Navy, with Vice Admiral Sadhu as chief guest.
- Delivery Plan: GRSE plans to deliver five warships — the stealth frigate Vindhyagiri and four Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft — and launch its two remaining NGOPVs by the end of FY 2026-27.
- Operational Role: Shruti is intended for coastal surveillance, protection of offshore assets, maritime interdiction and VBSS operations, anti-piracy and counter-infiltration missions, and HADR and search-and-rescue duties.
About the NGOPV Programme
- Programme: Part of an 11-ship Indian Navy programme; GRSE is building four vessels and Goa Shipyard Limited the remaining seven.
- Specifications: Each vessel is about 113 metres long, displaces 3,000 tonnes, and is built mainly with indigenous steel and equipment under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat push.
