Scientific name: Antilope cervicapra.
Family/Classification: Bovidae — the only living member of the genus Antilope.
Habitat/Distribution: Open grasslands and semi-arid plains across peninsular India; most abundant in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Conservation status: Schedule I, Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972; IUCN — Near Threatened; state animal of Punjab, Haryana, and Andhra Pradesh.

Features

Sexual Dimorphism: Males have a dark brown-to-black coat with a white underbelly; females and young stay fawn-coloured year-round.
Spiral Horns: Only males carry long, ringed, spiral horns, up to 79 cm.
High Speed: Among the fastest land animals in India, sustaining over 80 km/h to escape predators.
Herd Behaviour: Live in mixed herds of females and young, with territorial males holding separate grazing grounds.

Habitat Fragmentation: Expanding agriculture and urban development have fragmented traditional grassland habitat.
Human-Wildlife Conflict: Herds entering farmland lead to accidental deaths, retaliatory killing, and vehicle collisions.
Unfenced Hazards: Open wells and pits on farmland are a preventable mortality risk, as herds panic and stampede when chased.

Grassland Indicator Species: As a grazer dependent on open grassland, blackbuck populations indicate grassland ecosystem health.
Cultural Significance: Considered sacred in several Indian traditions, closely tied to the Bishnoi community's conservation ethic.
